Abstract:
This dissertation proposal highlights the need for research on an emerging organized crime entity in Japan, known as the hangure. The overall structure of this proposal is as follows: Chapter 1 introduces the Yakuza and hangure in Japan and sets the stage for the rest of the discussion. A more comprehensive version of this will be developed throughout the course of the proposed dissertation. Chapter 2 provides a literature review of organized crime, organized crime in Japan, the research gap, and the research questions that the proposed study will address. And finally, Chapter 3 will outline the research questions, data collection and analysis plan (including mixed methods approaches) to explain the emergence of the hangure.
