Public Health and Political Philosophy - Presented by Nick Evans
What can political philosophy tell us about public health? This talk takes on two issues that have arisen through the ongoing COVID pandemic. The first is the lack of complete engagement with public health by bioethics where, unlike clinical practice or scientific research, there are few clear operational guidelines for public health workers to navigate ethical dilemmas in their practice. The second is the lack of attention to political philosophy—how we structure our social institutions, prioritize the needs of different populations, and the role of government in governing societal needs—in public health and bioethics. Drawing on recent work in philosophy and on the history of public health, I make an argument for a robust public health institution, and the role of federal and state governments in building that institution.
