Physics Colloquium will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 from 4 to 5 p.m.

The colloquium will be virtual. Location: Contact Joanne Gagnon-Ketchen for link.

Andrew Gatesman, Associate Research Professor, Director (Submillimeter-wave Technology Laboratory), Department of Physics and Applied Physics, UMass Lowell will give a talk on "Overview of the Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory."

Abstract: Radar as a remote sensing modality is a fascinating interdisciplinary field of study bringing together physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and materials science. This presentation will provide an overview of several recent projects undertaken at UMass Lowell’s Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory including radar imaging, electromagnetic scale modeling, space geodesy, doppler radar, and mm-wave sensing.

Bio: Andrew Gatesman received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. In 1989 he joined the Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory as a graduate student studying the optical properties of materials at terahertz frequencies. In 1993 he joined the STL staff as a materials scientist where he studied electromagnetic absorbers, frequency selective surfaces, and high precision laser-based reflectometry. His current interests include rough surface scattering, radar clutter phenomenology, and dielectric materials characterization.

Gatesman is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Physics and Applied Physics at UMass Lowell and is the Program Director and Principal Investigator of STL, which delivers millimeter-wave & terahertz radar systems, radar imaging, and materials characterization solutions to DoD sponsors.
