UMass Lowell has updated its Frequently Asked Questions database with additional information regarding distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in the Commonwealth. The university continues to encourage employees to register for vaccinations as they become eligible.
Eligibility requirements are set by the state of Massachusetts. UMass Lowell plays no role in determining or verifying an individual’s eligibility but has worked with the President’s Office and our sister campuses periodically to clarify guidance from the state when questions arise.
Based on this clarifying guidance, it does appear some employees may qualify who work in COVID-19 forward-facing roles particularly where it comes to assisting with the implementation of isolation and quarantine protocols. University community members who believe they are eligible under current guidelines can make the personal decision to register for an appointment at a vaccine distribution site.
Additional answers to FAQ include:
Will UMass Lowell offer students and employees vaccines?
UMass Lowell is not currently a vaccine distribution site and with vaccine supply limited, it has no immediate plans to do so. UMass Lowell also has a close partnership with Lowell General Hospital, which has established a mass vaccination site very close to campus at 1001 Pawtucket Boulevard. While the university may at some point distribute vaccines to some or all UML community members, for the foreseeable future, students and employees should work with their personal care provider or sign up for vaccines when eligible at pharmacies or mass vaccination sites.
Will the vaccine be mandatory for students and employees to return to campus for the fall semester?
The current COVID-19 vaccines are authorized under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). While UMass Lowell strongly encourages all members of the UMass Lowell community to receive a vaccine when they are eligible to do so, no one can be required to take a vaccine under an EUA.
Where should I go for answers to questions about the vaccines?
More information about the vaccines authorized for emergency use can be found at the Food & Drug Administration’s website.
