Massachusetts public health officials have advised the university that the field hospital located at the Campus Recreation Center will be discontinued sooner than originally planned.

As a result, UMass Lowell will not move forward with a temporary rec facility in Cumnock Hall and instead redirect efforts to open the Campus Rec Center by March 1.

University officials made the change because disassembling and reassembling the exercise equipment twice — once to move it to Cumnock and again to move it back to the Campus Rec Center — would inevitably further delay the Campus Rec Center’s opening for students.

In the meantime, several cardio machines are available for students for reservation in University Crossing. Students can also visit the Rec Center website to participate in numerous virtual individual, group fitness or e-sports programs to stay active and connected to other students on campus.
