I want to encourage all faculty to sign up for Faculty Bystander Training being offered by the Making WAVES Initiative and the Center for Women & Work as part of their NSF-funded ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant.

Description of the training:

Microaggressions are brief and commonplace verbal or behavioral slights - whether intentional or unintentional - toward individuals who are members of traditionally underrepresented groups. When you witness a microaggression, it is sometimes difficult to know what to do: “Did that just really happen? Should I do something about it? What can I do that would be effective?” The WAVES Bystander Workshops are designed to help faculty navigate these challenges. The training addresses microaggressions based on multiple marginalized statuses.

There are two workshops available for the coming semester:

  • Workshop 1, Microaggressions & Bystander Behavior: A Tool Kit
Recommended for those who have not yet attended a WAVES bystander training workshop.
    Date/Time: Friday, Feb. 19, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
    Register online.
  • Workshop 2: Intersectional Microaggressions: Race, Ethnicity, Sexual Orientation & More
Recommended for those who have attended a prior WAVES bystander training workshop or already have a solid foundation or knowledge about bystander behavior.
    Date/Time: Friday, March 26, noon – 2 p.m. OR Thursday, April 15, 10 a.m. - noon.
    Register online
