The Kennedy College of Science, Department of Chemistry, invites you to attend a research proposal defense by Ali Shahrokhinia entitled “Polymer Nanoparticle Networks for Water Treatment Application.” The defense will be held Olney 518 on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 2 p.m.

Committee Chair: Prof. James Reuther, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell

Committee Members:

  • Prof. Jim Whitten, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell
  • Prof. Marina Ruths, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell
  • Prof. Yuyu Sun, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell

Abstract:

My research project is mainly concentrated on developing dynamically crosslinked, polymer nanoparticle networks for water purification applications that can be effectively regenerated using stimuli-responsive network reconfiguration. The synthesis of these dynamic nanoparticle networks (DNNs) can be accomplished via direct, in situ polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) and dynamic disulfide-exchange crosslinking forming nanostructured, worm-like networks with interstitial porosity. Furthermore and in another path, DNNs can be fabricated via dynamic covalent bond (DCB)-functional crosslinker incorporation into functional PISA nanoparticle systems using post-polymerization “click” crosslinking procedures.

All interested students and faculty members are invited to attend.
