This research is being conducted by Neil Shortland (PI) and Jill Portnoy (Co-PI) in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies, University of Massachusetts Lowell.

We are currently recruiting participants for a study of the relationship between the social environment, physiological functioning, psychological states and behaviors. Participants will be asked to respond to a series of questionnaires. We will then measure heart rate activity, EEG (brain activity measured using sensors on the head), and sweat rate while participants complete a series of tasks. Participants will receive $20 in cash as compensation for completing the study. Participants will spend about one hour answering survey questions and one hour completing tasks.

Participants may experience some minor psychological discomfort upon disclosing personal information in this study and being exposed to extremist-related photo content.

To be eligible to participate you must:

  • Be 18-25 years of age
  • Not be pregnant
  • Not have a heart condition
  • Not have a skin allergy to medical tapes or gels
  • Not have a diagnosed pervasive developmental disorder or intellectual disability
  • Not be an active member of the U.S. armed forces or Department of Defense.
