The UMass Lowell Commonwealth Honors Program is an academic enrichment program that encourages and celebrates the pursuit of academic excellence in undergraduate education. This is done through increased interaction with motivated faculty who offer small, seminar-like, and engaging courses. In addition, honor students work one-on-one with a faculty mentor who will guide them through a research or creative project that culminates in a written honors thesis in their senior year. The program promotes reading, reflective and analytical thinking, writing, creativity, and the presentation of ideas with individualized faculty feedback. The technical and professional relationship that an honor student develops with one's honors thesis advisor is rewarding and precious.
For many honor students, dedicated honors housing is a big benefit of the program as well. Honors housing enables honor students to establish important social interactions and it fosters a community of learners, leaders, and respectful citizens. Students who complete the program will graduate with a Commonwealth Honors Scholar designation on their transcript.
