Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I apply for Financial Aid at UMASS Lowell?
Undergraduate students attending UMass Lowell who wish to apply for financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available from any high school guidance office, UMass Lowell's Financial Aid Office or apply online through the world wide web. Incoming students accepted to the University who complete the FAFSA by March 1 receive notification of their financial aid awards by the end of March. Students applying after the March 1 priority deadline receive financial aid as funds become available.

Please note: Students should not wait for an admission decision from UMass Lowell before filing the FAFSA.
  2. Am I eligible to apply for financial aid?
Aid is available to students matriculated in a degree-granting or approved certificate program who are US citizens or have permanent visa status (green card, I-151, I-551, or I155C).  International students are not eligible for financial aid.
  3. What is financial need?
Financial need is the difference between the estimated cost of attendance for a school year and the student's expected family contribution.  An expected family contribution is calculated from information provided on the FAFSA.
  4. What aid is available to Undergraduate and Graduate Students at UMASS Lowell?
Financial Aid at UMass Lowell consists of:
  • Federal and state funding (undergraduate only).
  • Loans (money lent to a student that requires repayment during a specified period, often following the termination of studies)
  • Employment (federally or university sponsored on & off campus work for all or a portion of an academic year).
  • UML also participates in the AMS monthly payment plan. By paying monthly, you can use current income and rely less on savings and borrowing.  There are no interest charges (this is not a loan) although there is an enrollment fee.  For further information call AMS at (800)635-0120.
