Student Employment - Getting Started

The UMass Lowell Student Employment Office is designed to help you, as an enrolled student, pursue your educational goals by providing employment resources, regardless of your financial need. Wondering how to get started in your job search?

  1. Familiarize yourself with the various types of employment to determine the jobs for which you are eligible to apply.
  2. Log in to JobHawk, our job posting website, to search and apply to jobs that interest you. There are training guides and video tutorials available in the JobHawk "Students" tab to help you navigate through the site.
  3. Create a resume (help is available through the Career and Co-Op Center) and upload it to your JobHawk profile in order to apply for jobs. You can choose from a multitude of diverse job opportunities, all of which offer flexibility in scheduling, comfortable working environments and competitive pay rates.
  4. Check your UMass Lowell student e-mail and JobHawk account for replies from employers regarding setting up an interview.
  5. Accept a job!
  6. Complete the New Hire Packet and page 1 of the I-9 Form. The I-9 can not be completed until you accept the job offer. After you accept the job, you will receive an email from JobHawk with a link to complete step 1 of I-9. To finalize your I-9, please bring original, unexpired documents to the Student Employment Office. Your I-9 should be completed prior to reporting to your first shift.
  7. Review the Student Employment Handbook and University Wage Structure. Know your rights and responsibilities.

The Massachusetts Pregnant Workers Fairness Act provides rights beginning on that date and amends Massachusetts General Law to include its provisions (MGL c 151B, section 4).

Types of Employment

There are currently several types of student employment available. Each type of employment has varying eligibility criteria, funding sources & application procedures. The following information will explain each type of employment and who is eligible to apply:

Federal Work Study/ UMass Lowell Student Employment

Eligibility:

UMass Lowell students enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate program, who file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), and meet specific need-based criteria will receive notification of a work award with their financial aid package. Students are awarded on a funds-available basis as part of their financial aid packages.

Required for Students:

  • Complete a FAFSA for the current academic year.
  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by UMass Lowell and federal financial aid formulas.

How to Apply:

  • Students who receive a work award may log in to JobHawk to search and apply for positions designated as Financial Aid Student Employment.
  • Submit hiring paperwork directly to the Student Employment Office.

Off-Campus Employment (Job Location & Development)

Eligibility:

  • UMass students currently enrolled in a degree- seeking, undergraduate or graduate program . Positions are located at off-campus employers and are not affiliated with UMass Lowell.

How to Apply:

  • Log in to JobHawk to search and apply to positions designated as Off-Campus (JLD).
  • Submit any hiring paperwork directly to the off-campus employer according to their specific requirements.

Departmental Employment

Eligibility:

  • UMass students currently enrolled in a degree- seeking, undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Positions are located within various UMass Lowell departments. These positions are funded directly through the individual departmental budgets.

How to Apply:

  • Log in to JobHawk to search and apply to positions designated as departmental.
  • Submit required employment forms to the Student Employment Office.
