Going to The Ball

You are going to an actual ball! You smile at your reflection in the mirror and admire your new rose colored dress. You spent nearly all your savings in your preparations but it is worth it because you have a grand time. Your dance card is full all evening and you seem to have captured the attention of two eligible young men.

The first is Ebenezer Terry, the son of a prosperous Lowell storekeeper. Ebenezer is devilishly good looking and an excellent dancer. He is attending an academy and expects to study law. You find yourself imagining what your life would be like as the wife of a successful lawyer.

The other young man is Daniel Washburn. He spent seven years as a blacksmith's apprentice. Now he is a mechanic at the Machine Shop where they make everything from looms to locomotives. He is a bit of a dreamer, but seems to be clever and ambitious and has a wonderful smile. He is very interested in what you have to say; you talk and laugh for hours. You encourage both of them to call on you, and they do. You are not surprised when, a few months later, both propose.
