The Lighting Up Ball

You feel badly that you haven't sent more money home. You know your parents are disappointed in you, but believe that investing in yourself now will allow you to help your family more in the long run.

Everyone in Lowell is talking about the fall "Lighting Up Ball", which is the biggest social event of the season. You're excited about going to such a fancy dance, and about the chance that you might meet a young man there. There are so many more young women than men in Lowell, but you're an optimist. And one of the mechanics at the Machine Shop has already asked you to save a dance for him.

If you want to make a good impression, you'll need to have a special dress and new shoes, a shawl or coat, and perhaps a few dancing classes. You would love to go to the ball, but would it be better to save your money?

If you spend all your money, you'll never be able to attend high school, help out your family, or buy nice things for your house when you get married.
