Community and Social Sustainability

There are many informational and fun events that focus on sustainability to check out here at UMass Lowell!!

The Office of Sustainability also works to maintain a presence at large university events and works to demonstrate the university's commitment to sustainability through large, regularly-occurring, annual events.

Spring 2019 Events

More information on the annual events managed by the Office of Sustainability can be found by clicking on the Event links below:

  • Fall & Spring Into Recycling is a free, annual, recycling event that occurs once every semester-- in the fall in late October/early November and in the spring in April. Community members are allowed to bring in goods and material from their homes and offices for recycling.
  • Sustainable Move-In ensures all of the waste generated by the annual late-summer move-in is efficiently managed and responsibly recycled. This is accomplished in partnership with our waste hauler.
  • Sustainable Move Out Donation Drives occur twice a year at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters. These drives allow students to donate any unwanted material from their residence hall rooms and allow us to collect, sort, and donate all of the material to on-campus organizations or regional nonprofits.
  • The Lowell Earth Day Festival & Parade is one of the Office's premier events, it is an annual, city-wide, month-long celebration of the arts, nature, and sustainability culminating in a downtown Festival and Parade. It occurs in the Spring Semester every April usually culminating on the third Saturday of the month, on the weekend nearest Earth Day (April 22).
  • The Annual David Lustick Climate Change Teach-In brings leaders in climate change research and/or activism to UMass Lowell and welcomes students, faculty, and staff to engage in sustainability efforts here.

We also support sustainability at events outside of our office by:

  • Tabling and promoting the university's core commitment to sustainability at Welcome Days, Open Houses, and other large annual events like the Kennedy College of Sciences Block Party.
  • Working behind the scenes to integrate sustainability into other university events and programming like ensuring recycling is available at the Tsongas Center.
  • Making your event more sustainable! Contact us for more information on how we support events like Homecoming and the River Hawk Rally, always keeping in mind our zero-waste goals and initiatives!
