What is a Living-Learning Community (LLC)?

LLCs are intentional learning environments that are heavily supported by the Office of Residence Life and the various Colleges and Schools across UMass Lowell. Students live together on the same floor and often share the same major or career interest. Each LLC has a Faculty/Staff Advisor that helps to support the community. Resident Advisors create programs for LLC students that help to make connections, build skills and expose them to opportunities happening across campus and throughout the region related to the theme of their LLC.

Who can live in an LLC?

LLCs are for all students! For the 2018-2019 academic year we have 36 LLCs - 12 LLCs are designed for First-Year Students,18 are designed for Upper-Class Students. We also offer 6 Mixed LLCs, which are for students of all class years!

Each year we grow our program based on student interest, so if you have an idea for a new LLC, please let us know!

Where are LLCs located?

We have LLCs in every Residence Hall across campus! Each Residence Hall is unique, and we encourage students to be open minded and to choose an LLC based on their academic and career goals, not the building.

What does it mean to become part of an LLC? What do I have to do?

We ask that LLC students are engaged. By being engaged, we mean that we want you to participate in the programs and events sponsored by the LLC. We want you to learn and to benefit from the incredible programs that we will be intentionally creating for our LLC students. We will sponsor trips, bring in alumni and host events in the Residence Halls for each LLC. We also provide early move-in programs and end of the year socials! College is what you make of it. Don't just sit in your room, walk down the hall, meet new people and make the most of what is happening within your community!

How do I sign-up to live in an LLC?

Applying to a Living-Learning Community is free and easy:

Visit the Online Housing Portal and click on the housing application form.

Select the Living-Learning Community you wish to apply for and answer a few short answer questions on the "Living-Learning Community Selection" page of the housing application.

Invitations to participate in the LLC will be extended via email to applicants based on application answers and availability.

Select your room in the Living-Learning Community on LLC Room Selection Day.

How much does it cost to live in an LLC?

LLCs are FREE! We want students to benefit form living with like minded peers in an a community that is supportive and inclusive. We do not charge students any fees to live in an LLC outside of the cost to live on-campus.

What benefits will I gain as a result of living in an LLC?

You will hopefully meet fellow students who are like you, who share similar interests and passions, and make connections with faculty and staff who are excited to help you achieve your goals and dreams. We have developed Learning Objectives for each LLC which outline what we hope students will gain as a result of living in their respective LLC.

Roommates: Do I have to live with another LLC student, or can my friends who are not part of the LLC live with me?

The purpose of an LLC is to live with other like-minded students who may be experiencing the same academic coursework, navigating similar challenges, or share the same passions and interests. During room selection, only students who have applied and been accepted into an LLC may live together. If you want to live with your friends, encourage them to apply!
