OMA Virtual Student Success Summit

Fall 2020 SCHEDULE

August 25 - 27, 2020


Welcome to UMass Lowell! This 3-day virtual orientation serves the following cohorts: 

  • new international students, 
  • new DC-CAP students, 
  • Disabilities Services new & transfer students, and 
  • Multicultural Affairs new & transfer students.
  • Day 1 - Tuesday, August 25: Creating your Toolbox for Success

  • 10 a.m.-10:50 a.m.: Opening and meeting your cohort
    What does success look like? Your first semester is a critical launching point and this summit will help you identify your pathway for success, connect the dots, and provide you the tools & people who can help get you to your goal.

  • 11 a.m.-11:50 a.m.: Virtual learning workshop (DC-CAP, Disabilities Services students, OMA students)
    Virtual learning is something new for everyone. Learn effective strategies and hear from current students on how they've maximized & successfully mastered their virtual classes.

  • 11 a.m.-11:50 a.m.: ISSO Immigration Clearance Session (international students)
    During this session, all new international students will be checked in by ISSO and fulfilling their SEVIS requirements. How to maintain visa status, travel, employment, and other important topics will be discussed.

  • Noon-12:45 p.m.: Advising and Tutoring: Powering up you Academic Resources
    Understand your academic resources available to you! Confirm your class schedule with our College Based Advisors and learn about tutoring resources with our Centers for Learning team.

  • 12:50 p.m.-1:30 p.m.: Lunch Break and Open Office Hour
    Have a question, suggestion or concern? Stop in to chat with a staff or student or join us as we eat lunch. We'd love to get to know you better!

  • 1:40 p.m.-2:20 p.m.: Navigating UMass Lowell as River Hawks: A Student Panel
    Learn about live as a UMass Lowell student from current students! Get tips and tricks on navigating campus, how to talk to faculty, and more.

  • 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.: Student Organization Activity
    Led by a cultural student organization, come wrap up your day with a fun activity while getting to know UML student clubs!

Day 2 - Wednesday, August 26: Strategies for Success Inside your classroom

  • 10 a.m.-10:50 a.m.: Classroom Etiquette 101
    What is a syllabus, what are the unspoken classroom rules and how do I effectively use office hours? These questions & more are answered as you gain insight on what helps students succeed.

  • 11 a.m.-11:50 a.m.: Demystifying your Class Lecture
    Hear from UMass Lowell faculty about classroom structure and expectations for the fall 2020 semester. This session will help you prepare and be ready for your academics.

  • Noon-12:45 p.m.: Understanding your Majors and Minors
    Learn more about majors & minors and how to get the most out of aligning them with your career interest.

  • 12:50 p.m.-1:30 p.m.: Lunch Break and Open Office Hour
    Have a burning question from previous sessions? Come have lunch with us and get them answered!

  • 1:40 p.m.-2:20 p.m.: It's Never Too Early to Career Plan
    Now that you understand your major, let's start working towards achieving your long-term career goals. Career planning doesn't start in your last year of college, it can start now.

  • 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.: Student Organization Activity
    Unwind from a busy day with our cultural clubs! Come participate and meet people virtually in a fun activity led by our cultural clubs.

  • 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.: Parent Information Session
    Led by our Family Programs office, parents and guardians can learn more about classroom guidance and supporting your River Hawk!

Day 3 - Thursday, August 27: Knowing your Resources for Continued Success

  • 10 a.m.-10:50 a.m.: Student Life, Virtual Campus: Oh, the Possibilities!
    Hear from current UMass Lowell students as they guide you through an average day remote or in-person!  We will also explore parts of campus virtually.

  • 11 a.m.-11:50 a.m.: Budgeting Basics and Financial Wellness
    Learn how to budget as a college student and beyond with our Money Mentors (current students) & our Financial Aid office.

  • Noon-12:45 p.m.: Staying Health and Staying Active
    Our Health Services office will give an overview of their services and requirements of the Wellness Center, and our Campus Recreation Center (CRC) will be talking about their offerings this coming semester!

  • 12:50 p.m.-1:30 p.m.: Lunch Break and Meditation Session
    Decompress after a busy 3 days with Diana from the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) in a meditation session! Enjoy lunch with us afterwards.

  • 1:40 p.m.-2:15 p.m.: Your Time is Valuable: Time Management Workshop
    Making priority decisions and understanding how to effectively navigate a busy schedule while enjoying college will be the focus of this workshop. Time Management applications, ways to streamline and gain more free time will also be covered.

  • 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.: Student Organization Activity
    You made it! Thank you for joining us! Reward yourself with another great activity with our cultural clubs and meet other students that you can connect with throughout your years with us.
