Student Support Services Practicum:

Brief Practicum Description & Proposed Approach:

The practicum student will be working collaboratively with Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) staff to develop student support services aimed at underrepresented undergraduate students. There are a variety of content areas that students can be aligned with and these are described below. The position may be working with other departments in both Academic & Student Affairs to identify needs, areas of focus, resources, programmatic support, etc. in the effort to better support the underrepresented student experience at UMass Lowell. This position is ideal for someone looking to gain experience in program design and management with a focus on underrepresented student populations.

Practicum Goals: The main goal of the practicum is to develop a student support framework that would support undergraduate underrepresented students in areas such as, but not limited to, student success strategies, persistence & retention, building & sustaining community, engagement, research & assessment opportunities, mentorship, etc.

Interested undergraduate or graduate students would work closely with OMA staff to gain experience in any of the following areas (5-6 open positions):

Supporting cohort-based initiatives for underrepresented communities:

  • River Hawk Rising program
  • District of Columbia – College Access Program (DC-CAP)
  • International student experience (assisting with an ESL group and cultural programming)
  • LGBTQ+ resources and support
  • Program design, management & evaluation
  • Mentoring initiatives
  • Diversity training and presentation skills
  • Supporting partnerships between college-access organizations (Let’s Get Ready, BottomLine)
  • Research and assessment
