The university acknowledges students committed to the areas of student service, community service, and diversity & inclusion awarding up to eight medals in each service area upon the recommendation of members of the university community.

This award recognizes the accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate students for significant achievements in advancing the university’s goals in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and social justice through service, advocacy, community outreach initiatives, and/or research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Community Service

The Chancellor’s Medal for Community Service is awarded to university students who have made significant contributions to the public good (volunteer efforts which benefit the Greater Lowell Community, other communities, or other organizations) and thus have brought credit to themselves, the university and the larger community.

This award is presented to students who have shown commitment and dedication to community service efforts over an extended period of time. Graduating students enrolled in graduate, undergraduate and online and continuing education programs are eligible

The Chancellor’s Medal for Student Service is awarded to members of the graduating senior class who have made outstanding contributions to the university (clubs and organizations, campus programs, leadership position, or other activities that improve the quality of life for students at the University of Massachusetts Lowell) during their undergraduate studies in day or online and continuing education programs.

Application Process for Chancellor's Medals

The application process for the Chancellor's Medal for Student Service, Community Service and the Chancellor's Medal for Diversity and Inclusion will open December 2016. Please review all application requirements.

Application Deadline is now extended to Friday, February 10, 2017 at 4 p.m.

Application Status

  • All applicants will be notified of the status of their application by mid April 2017. Please be aware that by submitting this application, the final applicants’ information on it will be made available to the media.
  • Those students selected as recipients will be invited to attend the Pre-Commencement Gala on Friday, May 12, 2017, to receive their award. They will help lead the graduating students in the Commencement processional and will be seated on stage for additional recognition during the Commencement Ceremony.
