Helping Those Who Have Served Us

Rated as a “Best for Vets” university and a “Military Friendly” campus by Military Times and Victory Media, UMass Lowell has tripled its student veteran population over the last five years.

“ The Pershing Loan helped me when I was discharged and had not been paid in months. It allowed me to pay my mortgage, avoid foreclosure and buy food for my son and me. The loan was my bridge through a very rough time and as soon as I received my pay, I repaid the loan.”

As non-traditional students, veterans face challenges that most others do not, including supporting their families, working either full time or part time, juggling VA appointments and addressing injuries related to their military service.  UMass Lowell is committed to ensuring that student veterans have access to the support they need to achieve their goals.

The Pershing Fund

The Pershing Fund provides interest-free loans to student veterans at risk of withdrawing from the university due to financial difficulties.  It was established in 2012 by alumni members of UMass Lowell's original Squadron N-12, Pershing Rifles unit to give today's student veterans a helping hand toward the same university education that they themselves received, many as returning veterans in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Military veterans, ROTC cadets and children of disabled veterans enrolled at UMass Lowell are eligible to receive loans. All loan repayments are reinvested back into the Pershing Fund to originate new loans.
