Laura Kender, Scholarship Recipient

“Receiving a family-endowed scholarship means so much, because in my experience, UMass Lowell truly is a family place—a second home for my twin sister, our younger brother and me. Thanks to generous donors, we can stress less about finances and focus on our plastics engineering majors, varsity sports and maintaining our Dean’s List GPAs.”

Scholarship endowments allow you to create a permanent legacy at UMass Lowell and are a sound investment in a better future. Your gift is invested—never spent—and each year a distribution is made to benefit deserving students, many who may not otherwise be able to afford to attend.

Currently, UMass Lowell is meeting over 90 percent of demonstrated financial need. New scholarship endowments can help close that gap so that every student has the opportunity to pursue their education at UMass Lowell.

What are the advantages of establishing an endowed scholarship?

Creating an endowed scholarship allows you to fulfill your own personal philanthropic goals while helping support the needs and mission of UMass Lowell. You indicate preferences in how your scholarship is awarded including: program of study, academic merit, financial need or other criteria.

Reasons for establishing an endowed scholarship include:

  • Permanently honor a loved one or mentor
  • Say thank you for an education
  • Leave your permanent legacy
  • Connect a company name with future recruitment candidates
  • Celebrate personal and professional accomplishments
  • Perpetually support educational excellence
  • Assist today's students to become the leaders of tomorrow

How to Establish an Endowed Scholarship

An outright gift of $25,000 or a multi-year pledge (usually three to five years) will establish an endowed scholarship—and your lifelong legacy at UMass Lowell. Gifts of cash, stock, real estate, charitable remainder trusts, or bequests are accepted. Scholarship endowment gifts provide tax benefits to donors (especially if established through a gift of securities).
