HistoryHISTORY OF UMASS LOWELL'S SUSTAINABLE DONATION DRIVES
UMass Lowell began its first sustainable donation diversion drive in 2014 collecting 3,400 pounds of material. Prior to 2014, no goods were formally diverted from the waste stream and dumpsters were often overflowing with material that could be used by other students or individuals in need.
The university continued to see the amount of material donated grow as procedures were improved upon to 6,000 pounds in 2015, and 14,200 pounds in 2016.
In 2017, the university collected a total of 10,500 pounds of material. The decrease in weight is attributed to a noticeable decrease in the number of large furniture items donated (couches and chairs). Although that reduced the overall amount of weight collected we noticed a significant increase in the quantity of clothing and small household goods donated this year. This confirmed that drop in weight was due to uncontrollable fluctuations in the make-up of the ever-changing material residents bring with them to campus.
In 2018, the Office of Sustainability greatly expanded the event on campus, connected to more charities and non-profits, and improved sorting/delivery procedures. This made last year's Move Out the largest and most successful yet. In total, 16,500 pounds of items were donated to various charities like GradBag, Catie's Closet, and our own Navigator's Food Pantry.
