Frank X. Gaspar

Frank X. Gaspar, who was born and raised in the Portuguese West End of Provincetown, Massachusetts, is the author of five collections of poetry and two novels. Among his many awards are the Morse, Anhinga, and Brittingham Prizes for poetry, multiple inclusions in Best American Poetry, four Pushcart Prizes, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Literature, and a California Arts Council Fellowship in poetry. He was also a John Atherton Fellow at Bread Loaf, and a Walter Dakin Fellow at Sewanee. His debut novel, Leaving Pico, was a Barnes and Noble Discovery Prize winner, a recipient of the California Book Award for First Fiction and a New York Times Notable Book (paperback edition). His second novel, Stealing Fatima, was a MassBook of the Year in Fiction (Massachusetts Foundation for the Book).
His work has appeared widely in magazines and literary journals, including The New Yorker, The Nation, The Harvard Review, The Hudson Review, The Kenyon Review, The Georgia Review, The American Poetry Review, The Southern Review, Prairie Schooner, The Tampa Review, Miramar, and others.
Several of Gaspar’s books, including his two novels, treat Luso-American themes or settings, particularly the Portuguese community in Provincetown.
José Eduardo Agualusa
April 13, 2016 at 3:30 p.m.: Book talk by José Eduardo Agualusa, who has been long-listed for the Man Booker International Prize
Lowell, Mass. Invited by the Center for the Study of Europe at Boston University and the Saab Center for Portuguese Culture and Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, José Eduardo Agualusa (born in Huambo, Angola) spoke at UMass Lowell on April 13 at 3:30 p.m. in O’Leary, Room 478, South Campus. Agualusa’s novel, A General Theory of Oblivion, has been “long-listed” for the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, celebrating the finest in global fiction.
The event on April 13 was co-sponsored by the UMass Lowell English Department, the Jack and Stella Kerouac Center for the Public Humanities, and the Department of World Languages and Cultures.

Gonçalo M. Tavares
April 30, 2015 - Lowell, Mass, Invited by the Saab Center for Portuguese Culture and Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA), Gonçalo M. Tavares (born in Luanda, Angola, 1970), one of the leading writers of contemporary Portuguese literature and the most translated into English after José Saramago and António Lobo Antunes, gave a series of lectures in the US and Canada in late April and early May 2015.
Anthony De Sa
October 23, 2014 Lowell, Mass. The UMass Lowell Jack & Stella Kerouac Center for the Public Humanities, in collaboration with the Saab Center for Portuguese Culture and Research, welcomed the critically acclaimed, bestselling writer Anthony De Sa (www.anthonydesa.com), author of Barnacle Love and Kicking the Sky, for a book talk. De Sa’s work is inspired in part in his experience growing up in Toronto’s Portuguese community.
Katherine Vaz
March 14, 2014 - Lowell, MA. The University of Massachusetts Lowell Saab Center for Portuguese Studies, in partnership with the departments of English and World Languages and Cultures, hosted a lecture and reading by the American author Katherine Vaz. The event-free and open to the public-took place on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center (ICC), 50 Warren Street.
