This band performs at all home hockey games, as well as at one or two on-campus performances during the semester. Performing music from Bill Chase, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Tower of Power, and more, the band has a well-deserved reputation as a versatile and entertaining ensemble.
This group is open to all UMass Lowell students, regardless of major. It performs as the Hockey Pep Band for the Division One UMass Lowell RiverHawks Hockey at all home games. The current game schedule can be found on the Go Riverhawks website.
The UMass Lowell Pep Band, also known as the Jazz Rock Big Band, is under the direction of Dan Lutz, and Deb Huber. Established in 1995, the ensemble maintains a demanding schedule, performing at local festivals, state finals, and championships within the United States. The band also serves the University as a source of entertainment, performing at Division I hockey games and other campus events.
Boston sports writers have declared the band "the best in the East." The accolades and unsolicited praise received from alumni, University officials, and state dignitaries speak of an ensemble of the highest caliber. The band has been continuously described as being on the "... cutting edge of the idiom," performing everything from jazz and rock to blues, funk, and fusion.
The UMass Lowell Jazz Rock Big Band performs at Durgin Hall, a featured jazz ensemble of the Department of Music at UMass Lowell. Exploring eclectic big band repertoire, the ensemble performs standards and contemporary works such as Malaguena, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Third Wind, Spain, Moanin', and Birdland; and compositions by Thad Jones, Stan Kenton, Tower of Power, Don Eliis, Pat Metheny, Maria Schneider and more.
