How big should the artwork be?

The canvas/paper should be 24 inches wide and 9 inches tall, but the image should be 22 inches wide by 7 inches tall. In other words, the artwork should maintain a 1 inch border all the way around the canvas, which means for the 24" x 9" canvas, you have a 22" x 7" work space.

What orientation for the artwork should be used?

All projects must be composed using a landscape orientation.

Can submissions have more than one artist?

Yes, we welcome collaboration! Students should be aware that any prizes earned must be shared among the artists.

How can teachers, mentors, parents, and guardians help?

Teachers, mentors, parents, and guardians are encouraged to support students' efforts to create and submit an entry to the Cool Science competition. Adults can be helpful in discussing the science of climate change, providing supplies, and solving technical issues with students. However, all creative work must be done by the student(s). See the Parents and Teachers pages for more information. Parents and teachers can be very helpful in ensuring that the science communicated in the artwork is accurate and valid.

When and where will the winning submissions be displayed?

Selected submissions will be displayed throughout the Lowell Regional Transit Authority in the Spring.

What is the deadline for submitting artwork?

All entries must be submitted by the December 15, 2018 deadline. If mailing a hard copy of your submission, than the package must be post-marked by the deadline, December 15, 2018.

If submitting the artwork electronically, what format should be used?

Artwork files submitted electronically should be saved as a GIF or JPEG file with a resolution of 300 dpi. If submitting a digital picture of the artwork, take lots of pictures under different lighting conditions to pick the one that looks the best. Blurry, out-of-focus, and cut off images are not helpful.
