The primary objective of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is to provide students with the highest-quality learning that meets the needs of industry and society, preparing our graduates to pursue successful careers. The strength of the program is its emphasis on hands-on experience through its base in the methodology of Design-Build-Test, where students can build and test their theoretical designs. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in science and engineering in the fields of mechanics, fluid flow, heat transfer, energy, material science, and dynamic systems. Mechanical and Industrial Engineering graduates are equipped with the knowledge to engage in lifelong learning to impact their communities and address important societal issues.
The department has an interconnected objective to contribute to the advancement of knowledge by developing and maintaining strong research programs to complement our educational mission and address the evolving needs of industry and society through the following national needs: Energy and Sustainability, Defense and Security, Manufacturing and Industry, and Engineering Education.

The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department is currently the largest department in the Francis College of Engineering, and is poised for many more exciting changes, as well as continued success, in the years to come.
The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department offers an extensive range of graduate and undergraduate programs. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org).
There are approximately 900 undergraduate and over 150 graduate students enrolled in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. The faculty is comprised of 30 full-time professors with distinguished academic, research and industrial backgrounds. Mechanical and Industrial Engineering faculty are award-winning researchers and dedicated academics with the highest level of commitment to providing their students with a quality education and rewarding experience at UMass Lowell.
