The Summer Kayak Center and Outdoor Adventure Internship/Practicum is designed to enhance students’ academic education with hands-on experience as part of a university recreation program. While we encourage students from all programs of study to apply, this internship may correlate best with recreation related academic programs (such as outdoor recreation, parks and recreation management, leisure studies, and outdoor leadership). Interns are expected to apply and integrate learning between their academic coursework and internship experience based on mutually agreed upon goals. Intern reports directly to the Assistant Director of Outdoor and Bicycle Programs.
The intern’s primary responsibilities will be with our summer Kayak Center. Our Kayak Center operates out of the Bellegarde Boathouse, located on the shores of the Merrimack River. Kayak Center offerings typically include hourly and daily kayak, canoe and SUP rentals, adult and youth tours and clinics, teen and youth day paddling clinics. Kayak center is open for rentals Monday - Friday 3 p.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., May 26 to August. Additionally, day programs and evening tours occur outside of those hours.
Secondary responsibilities include working for the Outdoor Adventure Program and Bike Shop. The Outdoor Adventure Program offers a variety of trips for UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff. Trips include day hiking, river and ocean paddling, rock climbing, bicycling and backpacking trips ranging all over New England and beyond. The Bike Shop offers bicycle repairs, new and used bicycle sales, do it yourself shop time, and parts as well as serves the Freewheelers bike share program providing logistics and maintenance for a fleet of free daily rental bicycles to five locations across campus.
