Kayak Center & Outdoor Adventure Internship

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

The Summer Kayak Center and Outdoor Adventure Internship/Practicum is designed to enhance students’ academic education with hands-on experience as part of a university recreation program.  While we encourage students from all programs of study to apply, this internship may correlate best with recreation related academic programs (such as outdoor recreation, parks and recreation management, leisure studies, and outdoor leadership).  Interns are expected to apply and integrate learning between their academic coursework and internship experience based on mutually agreed upon goals.  Intern reports directly to the Assistant Director of Outdoor and Bicycle Programs.  

The intern’s primary responsibilities will be with our summer Kayak Center. Our Kayak Center operates out of the Bellegarde Boathouse, located on the shores of the Merrimack River.   Kayak Center offerings typically include hourly and daily kayak, canoe and SUP rentals, adult and youth tours and clinics, teen and youth day paddling clinics.  Kayak center is open for rentals Monday - Friday 3 p.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Sunday  10 a.m. - 6 p.m., May 26 to August.  Additionally, day programs and evening tours occur outside of those hours.  

Secondary responsibilities include working for the Outdoor Adventure Program and Bike Shop.  The Outdoor Adventure Program offers a variety of trips for UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff.  Trips include day hiking, river and ocean paddling, rock climbing, bicycling and backpacking trips ranging all over New England and beyond.  The Bike Shop offers bicycle repairs, new and used bicycle sales, do it yourself shop time, and parts as well as serves the Freewheelers bike share program providing logistics and maintenance for a fleet of free daily rental bicycles to five locations across campus. 

Job Responsibilities

Interns will gain experience in the following areas:

  • Daily Kayak Center programming and operations

  • Outdoor Adventure Program logistics and trip leadership  

  • Assist with program planning, marketing, implementation, administration, and evaluation 

  • Leadership, instruction and group management with peers, adults, teens and children 

  • Serve a diverse customer base of students, faculty, staff and community members

This position is a full time internship with varying hours depending on the needs of the program and intern.  Interns should be flexible and expect to work 30+ hours each week 5 days/week, 6-10 hours/day.  Employment will run from May 21 to the end of August.  End dates may vary slightly based on the needs of the intern.  Interns must attend staff training in Lowell, MA May 21 - 26.   Housing access and move in will be available May 18 and 19.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be a current full or part-time university student in good academic standing, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
  • General knowledge of recreation policies and procedures, and the ability to work effectively within a university setting
  • Basic paddling skills, risk management and good judgment
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good critical thinking and problem solving abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in leading groups is preferred
  • Experience working with children or adolescents preferred
  • Complete ACA River Kayak Instructor Course Levels I-II (offered with employment)
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED required (will train), Wilderness First Aid Certification or higher preferred
  • Valid drivers license and ability to safely operate 12 passenger van with a kayak trailer required

Intern/Practicum students are expected to demonstrate responsibility, initiative, dependability, inclusiveness, and a positive attitude. At the beginning of the internship or practicum, a learning contract will be established between Campus Recreation and the intern to make sure expectations are clear and learning needs are met, including any academic requirements.

  • $150/week stipend
  • On-campus housing and meal plan provided
  • Academic credit when applicable
  • Access to outdoor trips and equipment at discount or no cost
  • Registration Fee covered for ACA Kayaking Instructor Course (Level I-III)
