Priyamvada Gopal, Ph.D., reflects on her book, "Insurgent Empire: Anticolonial Resistance and British Dissent" (Verso, 2019), which shows how Britain’s enslaved and colonial subjects were active agents in their own liberation and, in doing so, shaped British ideas of freedom and emancipation back in the United Kingdom. Gopal, Ph.D., is a Professor of Postcolonial Studies at University of Cambridge, Churchill College, and author of multiple books including "The Indian English Novel" (2009) and "Literary Radicalism in India" (2005). In 2021, she was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers by Prospect magazine.
