Spring Honors Scholarship Series

Session 1: An Overview of External Scholarship Opportunities; 6:30-8 PM 2/8

What are nationally-competitive scholarships and fellowships? What are their requirements and restrictions? How and when do you apply? What are their missions and what are they looking for in candidates? Our introductory workshop focuses on demystifying the “hidden curriculum”, identifying funding sources and research opportunities, getting started with personal and research statements, and how to request letters of reference. The first workshop will also provide an overview of the sessions included in the workshop series.

Session 2: The NEW Riverhawk Scholarship Portal; 6:30-8 PM 2/15

Meet with Michelle Smith, Senior Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid at UML about applying for internal scholarship opportunities, navigating the new and improved Scholarship Portal, and funding your education.

Session 3: Co-ops, Internships, and Experiential Learning 2/22:

A conversation on co-ops, internships, and experiential learning opportunities for students from all majors with Cooperative Education and Experiential Learning Director Rae Perry. Bring your questions about the process and prepare to get your resume together early enough in the semester to take advantage when employers start recruiting for summer jobs and internships.

Session 4: Personal Statement Freewrite and Building Your Network of Recommenders, 6:30-8:00 PM 3/1

Most scholarships for which you may apply require a personal statement that links experience from your past to who you are now and who you want to be after graduation. In this workshop, you’ll choose a story from your own life and develop it into a personal statement. This doesn't have to be one of the most hilarious or horrifying things that ever happened to you. It can be, but it can also be something small and meaningful. Once you have a personal statement you can expand it or shrink it based on length requirements. We will also discuss how to develop a network of potential recommenders to write you letters of reference.

Session 5: Personal Statement Peer Review, 6:30-8:00 PM 3/15

Bring a draft of a scholarship application essay or personal statement to revise for you spring scholarship applications. Gain practice offering specific, constructive, actionable feedback with a purpose of making your work stronger. Know that there is no one “right” way to write a scholarship essay--the goal is not to have people rewrite their personal statements the way you would write it but to have everyone make their own work stronger.
