Mentoring is an important way of insuring faculty success. Mentors provide more than occasional career advice; they are sources of sustained career assistance that can take many forms. We encourage our faculty to have a network of mentors on and off campus and to serve as a mentor to others. Some UMass Lowell colleges have formal disciplinary-based mentoring programs The Office of the Provost supplements those programs by creating a series of activities where faculty may increase the size of their on-campus professional networks and learn about the importance of global and national mentoring networks for their own academic success. We cultivate a sense of individual agency and shared responsibility for network create and use.
