CAP Student Life Subcommittee

The Climate Action Plan Student Life Subcommittee serves as an integrator of greenhouse gas reduction (GHG) efforts and climate change concepts to the student population through support of initiatives driven by the Sustainability, Academic, Energy and Project Identification and Administration & Finance Subcommittees.

OUR MISSION

The Student Life Subcommittee supports the implementation of the UMass Lowell Climate Action Plan by developing and perpetuating means to achieve balance between campus growth and GHG reductions. The Student Life Subcommittee fosters behavior change among UMass Lowell students through education and by engaging them in GHG reduction initiatives including: programs, establishing energy use policy, and campus wide marketing. The subcommittee will establish and maintain partnerships with the Sustainability, Academic, Energy Project ID and Transportation Subcommittees to achieve and support common initiatives and goals.

STUDENT LIFE SUBCOMMITTEE INITIATIVES

Teach In
  • Marketed the fall Teach In (a free Climate Change Initiative event that features speakers and student-led projects) and offered incentives for students to attend.
Climate Action Survey
  • Redesigned and distributed a Climate Action Survey to all UMass Lowell students, 1,596 students participated. This survey helped indicate to the committee that our committee needs to educate students more on the topics of: recycling items other than cans and bottles, green laundry usage and products, as well as accentuate the bike share program we offer here on campus. View the survey analysis.
Bicycle Friendly Campus Redesigned and proposed new suggested items to bring and not to bring to campus.
  • The Office of Residence Life statement of "Commitment to the Environment" was added to show students that the office also supports the mission of the university for sustainability and climate action initiatives. The new list also suggests to students and parents that they purchase and use Energy Star rated appliances.
  • The committee is currently working on updating climate action marketing. We will be reprinting the laundry signs to be posted inside the residence halls. We will also be creating door hangers to hang on every door inside the residence halls. One side will concentrate on the bike share program offered through Campus Recreation and the other side will focus on recycling/laundry efforts.
