Research Interests

Nanomaterials, Glyconanomaterials, Nanomedicine, Surface Functionalization, Microarrays, Graphene chemistry

The central theme of our research program is functional surfaces and interfaces with specific applications in nanomedicine and nanoelectronics. Research in our laboratory focuses on developing new surface chemistry that is general, efficient, can accommodate ligand diversity, maintain ligand bioaffinity, and give bioactive and stable interfaces. Our research group has been at the forefront of the glyconanomaterial research. We have developed new methods on the synthesis, characterization and applications of novel glyconanomaterials. We found that the glycan ligands profoundly influence how the glyconanomaterials interact with the biological entities. We are developing new strategies to make nanotherapeutics to target drug-resistant bacterial infections. Graphene chemistry is another focus of our research. We are developing ways to modify graphene with well-defined functionalities, and to construct graphene-based devices.
