Margaret Knight is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island in 2000; her dissertation was focused on cognitive function in schizophrenia. She is a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Specialist with over 30 years experience, primarily working with people experiencing mood disorders and psychotic disorders. In addition, she has several years of experience working with older adults who experience cognitive problems. Knight’s recent research has focused on alternative nursing interventions promoting positive outcomes for persons hospitalized with mental health problems. This research has included sensory interventions, mindfulness interventions and organizational protocols to reduce falls in acute psychosis. The bulk of this work has taken place at McLean Hospital in Belmont Massachusetts, a Partners affiliated psychiatric facility. More recently, Knight has begun research in cognitive function in aging adults.
From an educational perspective, Knight has been a co-investigator in the Bring Diversity to Nursing Program. This program has been funded since 2008 (2008-2011; 2012 no-cost extension; 2012-2015) through the Division of Nursing (DN), Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) under grant number D19HP09221-01-02 and title Nursing Workforce Diversity. The program has also received funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, "Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Workforce Development Grant", 2007-2014, for the pre-entry recruitment activities and faculty cultural competency workshops.
She has several publications in peer review journals such as the Journal of Cultural Diversity, Journal of Gerontological Nursing, Journal of Nursing Care Quality, Issues in Mental Health Nursing and the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing. Knight is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (Past President of the New England Chapter), Sigma Theta Tau International Eta Omega Chapter (Past President), Eastern Nursing Research Society, and the American Public Health Association.
