Sherry Bhalla, Medical Laboratory Science
“Mr. Hoff is a true source of inspiration for students who are highly committed to their field ... he makes students’ dreams come true.”
Eager to promote health and well-being, junior student Sherry Bhalla traveled from India to the U.S. in 2010 to pursue a degree in Medical Laboratory Science
at UMass Lowell.
“UMass Lowell faculty have strong credentials that are helping me build a foundation to apply my skills in the work environment,” says Bhalla. “I want to exercise sound judgment in establishing, performing and evaluating laboratory testing.”
She is looking forward to next semester when she will work in a clinical environment, a requirement of the program. “The exposure to clinical sites gives students an opportunity to gain experience and show potential employers our skills,” she says.
Gaining an education has not been easy for Bhalla, which is why she was grateful to receive the Charles J. Hoff Scholarship
– the largest privately initiated scholarship program in UMass history. Charles Hoff ’66 ’04 (H), chair of UMass Lowell’s first-ever major comprehensive fundraising campaign, has a generous legacy of giving to the university.
“Mr. Hoff is a true source of inspiration for students who are highly committed to their field and want to succeed in their lives,” says Bhalla. “He makes students’ dreams come true.”
After her expected graduation in 2016, Bhalla plans on working toward her Master’s degree so that she can maintain and promote standards of excellence in the art and science of the medical laboratory field.
