Jim Ogonowski, the Republican candidate for Massachusetts’s Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, visited UMass Lowell on Sept. 14 to learn about the University’s research on renewable sources of energy. In the top photo, Ogonowski, left, is shown a new thin, lightweight, lithium-polymer battery being tested by Prof. Ziyad Salameh, right, at the Battery Evaluation Laboratory. Looking on is Prof. Craig Armiento, chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.

Ogonowski also viewed the photovoltaic array (bottom photo) as well as the wind turbines atop the College of Engineering building. This hybrid system generates more than 15 kilowatts of electricity for use in the campus.
