Come spring, tune in to the National Geographic channel on cable and you may see a familiar face. Prof. James Sherwood of the Mechanical Engineering Department, and director of the UMass Lowell Baseball Research Center, is featured on a program about the physics of baseball. A film crew spent more than 12 hours on campus recently to tape interviews and shots of the research equipment.

The “bat lab” analyzes baseball bat performance and durability, and the Center is the official certification center for all NCAA baseball bats and Major League Baseball bats. The Center also has complete baseball testing services and, each year, certifies that the balls to be used in the World Series meet standards.
