UML students who struggle with late night physics and calculus questions now have four live tutors online and ready to help them arrive at the right answer. A new initiative of the Centers for Learning, the tutoring program is a resource for calculus and physics students from 7 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Thursday.
“Thanks to the availability of free technology for use on our existing server, we’ve created a shared whiteboard environment for students and tutors to work in real time,” says David Driscoll, associate director of Educational Computing. “It’s a terrific way to provide support our students on their time, especially the large population of students who work after school.”
Following collaboration with the Mathematics and Physics departments, physics and calculus were chosen as the first online help topics as they are considered high risk freshman classes. Tutors are paid UML students who’ve distinguished themselves with a 3.5 GPA or higher, have successfully completed the class, and have a recommendation from a faculty member.
“The response from students has been very positive,” says Sheila Riley-Callahan, executive director of Academic Services. “In addition, the tutors are enjoying the way their work with students has fine-tuned their presentation skills. In fact, some are considering careers in teaching now.”
