Assoc. Prof. Joyce White of Physical Therapy joined a group of 30 surgeons, occupational and physical therapists and other health volunteers on a medical trip to Guatemala City this past summer.
During the visit, organized by the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation, the group performed surgery on 44 children and young adults, saw more than 100 therapy patients and fabricated numerous splints. The illnesses ranged from congenital deformities to burns, fractures, soft tissue trauma and peripheral nerve injuries.
In addition more than 400 doctors, therapists and students from Latin American countries attended a two-day conference sponsored by the foundation and three Guatemalan health associations.
At the conference, Prof. White presented a lecture on the physical examination of the wrist.
