Prof. Ron Brent of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and his wife, Leor Sear-Brent ’93, helped with hurricane relief in Louisiana this summer. With their children Sarah, 14, and Adam, 9, the Brents guided 18 Jewish youths, who were part of the American Jewish Society for Service, a 60-year-old organization described by Brent as “Habitat for Humanity with Bagels and Lox.”

The Brents’ group worked for six weeks in Abbeville, Louisiana, a town hit hard by hurricane Rita. “We were treated like long lost family, with warmth and kindness, and so often praised simply for being there,” says Brent. The group lived at the Lighthouse for Jesus Ministries’ middle and high schools.

“Every weekday we worked on homes, helping to restore them to habitable conditions,” says Brent. “No matter the task, the work was rewarding just knowing we were getting these families that much closer to moving back home.”
