DifferenceMakers Pitch Concepts for New Products, Services

When and where: Wednesday, Dec. 4, 3 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell

What: UMass Lowell students developing innovations for new mechanical and electronic devices, mobile apps, “smart” clothing and more will share their ideas and vie for seed money to advance their concepts at the Francis College of Engineering Prototyping Competition. The contest is part of UMass Lowell’s DifferenceMaker Program, which teaches entrepreneurship skills and helps students launch business and nonprofit ventures. Since the program began in 2012, participants have founded 33 companies, raised more than $2.5 million to support their startups and have filed or received eight patents.

Immigrants’ Impact on Mill Cities to be Explored at Free Program

When and where: Wednesday, Dec. 4, 6 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Harbor Place, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill

What: “The World Comes to Massachusetts: 100 Years of Immigration History in Mill Cities” will be presented by UMass Lowell Distinguished University Professor Robert Forrant, an expert on local and American history. Free and open to the public, the program is the latest in the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub’s Cultural Speaker Series. Free Concerts Spotlight Musicianship

Where: Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell

What: Free concerts that demonstrate the musicianship being developed through UMass Lowell’s programs will be staged for the public and campus. No tickets are required for these events and free parking is available in the nearby Wilder Lot. Events include performances by:

  • University Choirs – UMass Lowell students, faculty, staff and members in the Chamber Singers, University Choir and Choral Union will perform traditional and modern selections under the direction of music faculty members Brianne Biastoff and Jonathan Richter. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 8 p.m.
  • Wind Ensemble – The concert will feature a performance of composer William Schuman’s “New England Triptych” and will be conducted by Daniel Lutz, director of university bands. Thursday, Dec. 5, 8 p.m.
  • Concert Band – This group of student musicians will play selections by traditional and contemporary composers. Debra-Nicole Huber, associate director of university bands, will conduct the ensemble. Thursday, Dec. 12, 8 p.m.

Holiday Fair Features Work of Women Crafters, Artists

When and where: Thursday, Dec. 5, 3 to 7 p.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell

What: Women artisans, crafters and entrepreneurs who are UMass Lowell graduates, faculty, staff and friends of the university, will showcase their goods at the annual Women’s Works Holiday Art and Craft Fair. The free event for the public features handmade jewelry, knitted items, food, paintings and more for sale and includes performances, an art show and a silent auction. Plastics that Mimic Proteins, DNA are Focus of Research Event

When and where: Friday, Dec. 6, 8:45 a.m. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell

What: Research into plastics that mimic proteins and DNA will be presented by UMass Lowell Chemistry Assistant Prof. James Reuther at the Tripathy Memorial Symposium, which unites faculty and industry researchers from across the country to share their groundbreaking work. Now in its 19th year, the free event for the campus and community is named for the late Sukant Tripathy, a UMass Lowell chemistry professor who served as director of the Center for Advanced Materials, provost and vice chancellor during his career. A Cappella Concert Celebrates Talented Student Vocalists

When and where: Sunday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m. Comley-Lane Theatre, Mahoney Hall, South Campus, 870 Broadway St., Lowell

What: UMass Lowell students who perform in the singing groups Fermata Nowhere, Hawkapella, the Hawkettes and Vocality will join forces to stage their Fall A Cappella Showcase for the campus and community. Admission is $10 per person for the public, $5 for high school students and free for UMass Lowell students with an ID.
