Kids Week Workshops to Teach Skills, History 

Where and when: Tuesday, Feb. 19 through Friday, Feb. 22. Tsongas Industrial History Center, Boott Cotton Mills Museum, 115 John St., Lowell

What: Youths age 6 to 17 will hone their creativity and analytical skills while learning about local history at free workshops presented as part of Lowell Kids Week, organized by Lowell National Historical Park and community collaborators. Several events will be presented by the Tsongas Industrial History Center – a partnership between UMass Lowell’s College of Education and the national park that educates thousands annually about the American Industrial Revolution – including:

  • Old Tyme Art – Learn how to write with a quill pen and ink and design a journal, while also making silhouettes, an art form popular in the early 1800s. Tuesday, Feb. 19, noon to 1 p.m.
  • Creation Stations – Paint on marble, make paper crafts and enjoy a variety of other activities. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 9 to 10 a.m.
  • Weaving Workshops – Learn how cloth is designed, patterned and made. Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
  • Engineer It! – Design a model of a vehicle that can carry goods. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2 to 3 p.m. 
  • Waterpower Workshop – Design, build and operate a model of a canal system to learn about the energy that water can create and how it ties into Lowell’s history. Friday, Feb. 22, 2 to 3 p.m.

Impact of the Portuguese Empire Explored at Free Program 

Where and when: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 5 p.m. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Room 222, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

What: The Portuguese colonial empire – which spanned from the 1500s to the 1990s – will be examined at a free program for the campus and community. Elsa Peralta, an expert in Portuguese history from the University of Lisbon, will offer her insights on how the empire shaped the identity of Portugal and its people. The event is presented by UMass Lowell’s Saab Center for Portuguese Studies, which promotes study of the language, literature and culture of the Portuguese-speaking world. Rise of Global Feminism Traced at Conference

Where and when: Friday, Feb. 22, keynote address at 11 a.m. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Room 222, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

What: “Voices of Resistance,” a free event for the campus and public, will bring together UMass Lowell faculty, staff and students and members of the community to discuss how to advance women’s quality of life, health and leadership. Gender studies scholar Elora Halim Chowdhury will deliver the conference’s keynote address on the rise of feminist movements and impact of sexual trauma and violence around the globe. UMass Lowell professors Allyssa McCabe of Psychology, Jill Lohmeier of Education and Carol Hay of Philosophy will be among the program’s speakers. Entrepreneurs to Learn About Medical-Device Advances for Pets 

Where and when: Wednesday, Feb. 27, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), 110 Canal St., Lowell

What: Entrepreneurs with ideas for medical devices that improve pets’ health will hear from experts from Johnson & Johnson about opportunities in the billion-dollar veterinary products market and how such products and technologies can be adapted for successful use by humans. The event is presented by the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), a partnership between UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School in Worcester that helps medical-device and biotech startups bridge the gap between idea and market.
