Performance is Part of Prestigious UMass Lowell Band Camp

When: Monday, July 15 through Saturday, July 20. Lowell Spinners performance is Monday, July 15 at 6:45 p.m.

What: More than 130 young musicians from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and Florida will be at UMass Lowell next week building on their talent and skills at the Mary Jo Leahey Symphonic Band Camp.

As part of the experience, the students will play the national anthem at a Lowell Spinners minor-league baseball game that will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 2004 World Series win by the Boston Red Sox. The game at LeLacheur Park, adjacent to UMass Lowell’s East Campus will include members of the 2004 Red Sox team.

Now in its 23rd year, the camp unites talented high school musicians with UMass Lowell Music Department faculty, alumni and student instructors for a weeklong immersion in lessons and ensemble performances. The camp is led by UMass Lowell graduate Debra-Nicole Huber, director of instrumental music outreach and associate director of university bands.   

The student musicians will also play for the public on Saturday, July 20 at noon, when they stage a free concert at Durgin Hall, 35 Wilder St., Lowell on UMass Lowell’s South Campus. The performance will feature composer George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” Frank Ticheli’s “Cajun Folk Songs,” the Canadian-American folk song “Shenandoah” and more.

Participants are from Acton, Andover, Ayer, Barre, Bedford, Billerica, Brockton, Byfield, Chelmsford, Cheshire, Dracut, Falmouth, Groton, Holden, Hudson, Lancaster, Lawrence, Lowell, Malden, Marblehead, Maynard, Medford, Methuen, Monson, Natick, Newton, North Andover, Norwood, Peabody, Quincy, Reading, Stoughton, Stow, Sutton, Townsend, Tyngsborough, Walpole, Waltham, Wayland, Westborough, Wilmington and Woburn, Mass., along with Amherst, Londonderry and Pelham, N.H.; Jenkintown, Pa.; Stafford, Conn.; Glens Falls, N.Y.; and Winter Springs, Fla.
