Acclaimed Author, Haverhill Native Andre Dubus III to Speak

When and where: Wednesday, Dec. 12, 6 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Third Floor, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill

What: Best-selling author and UMass Lowell English Prof. Andre Dubus III will talk about and read from his latest novel “Gone So Long” at an event for the public. The program will include a question-and-answer session with the audience and Dubus will sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase. The program is one in the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub (iHub) Cultural Speakers Series, which brings UMass Lowell experts to the university’s new campus in downtown Haverhill. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit Emmaus Inc., which provides housing and support services to people in need throughout the community. Local Schoolchildren to Share Budding Talents at Free Concert

When and where: Friday, Dec. 14, 7 p.m. Durgin Hall, South Campus, 35 Wilder St., Lowell

What: “Winter Wonder,” a free concert for the community, will be presented by local public school students learning to play classical stringed instruments through the nationally acclaimed UMass Lowell String Project. The musicians, in elementary through high school, will perform orchestral classics and contemporary favorites in a variety of groups, from the Prelude Ensemble for the youngest musicians to the Lowell Youth Orchestra, comprised of the most accomplished performers. The concert will be conducted by UMass Lowell music performance graduate Allyn McCourt. Free parking is available in the nearby Wilder Lot. Art and Design Students Showcase Works at Free Exhibit

When and where: Artists’ reception – Tuesday, Dec. 18, 5 p.m. University Gallery, Mahoney Hall, South Campus, 870 Broadway St., Lowell. The exhibit in University Gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 19 through Friday Dec. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 2 through Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.

What: UMass Lowell students studying for their bachelor of fine arts degrees will display their senior thesis projects during a free exhibit for the campus and community. Featured works will include illustrations, printmaking and multimedia projects, and video installations. The students, whose hometowns include Dorchester, Methuen and Westford, will talk about what inspired their art during a free artists’ reception that will kick off the show.
