MEDIA ADVISORY

WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 12, 6 p.m.

WHERE: University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell. Contact UMass Lowell media relations for directions and parking information.

WHAT: Experts on politics, business, ethics and health will weigh in on how the outcome of the 2018 midterm elections could shape the country’s future at a faculty showcase for the campus and public. Leading the discussion will be UMass Lowell professors John Cluverius, Erica Steckler and Amy Smalarz.

The call in some quarters to impeach President Donald Trump, whether teachers should purchase guns for their classrooms and how business and the environment may be affected by shifting public policies will be among the topics raised.

Cluverius is an authority on U.S. politics and associate director of UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion. A former field operative for political campaigns across the country, his recent work includes a poll by the center on the hotly contested Democratic primary in Massachusetts 3rd congressional district, where a recount of election results is underway this week.

Steckler is the co-director of UMass Lowell’s Donahue Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility. An expert on corporate identity and authenticity, she teaches management in the university’s Manning School of Business.

Rounding out the panel will be Smalarz, an authority on health policy, patient care and leadership in health-care organizations, who worked as a consultant in the industry before launching a career in higher education. She teaches in UMass Lowell’s Department of Public Health.

The event is the first this year in UMass Lowell’s Faculty Showcase Series, which benefits student scholarships. Tickets for the public are $15 per person and may be purchased at www.alumni.uml.edu
