GraphicGraphic Artist to Share Inspiration Behind His Fine Art, Commercial Work
When: Tuesday, March 21, 3:30 p.m.
What: Drawing his inspiration from California’s punk rock and skateboarding scenes, graphic artist Russ Pope – who has led marketing efforts for VANS apparel and contributed designs to other retailers – will talk about the creative process behind his portraits and doodles of faces in his fine art and commercial work. His presentation, “Who’s Who,” is free and open to all.

CommonwealthState Lawmakers to Hear From Public at ‘Commonwealth Conversations’
When: Tuesday, March 21, 6:30 p.m.
What: Massachusetts Senate President Stan Rosenberg and state senators from across the Commonwealth – including Eileen Donoghue, Kathleen O’Connor Ives, Barbara L’Italien and Bruce Tarr, who serve constituents throughout the Merrimack Valley – will hold a free town hall-style forum to discuss issues of importance to the public. The event is a listening session that brings Bay State residents face-to-face with Beacon Hill lawmakers.

CareerHundreds of Students, Recruiters to Meet at Career Fair
When: Wednesday, March 22, 2:30 to 4 p.m.
What: More than 1,200 UMass Lowell students looking for jobs after graduation or to gain real-world experience through co-ops and internships will pitch their skills to 200 employers at the Spring Career Fair. Ninety-five percent of UMass Lowell bachelor’s degree recipients are either employed full time or pursuing a graduate degree less than a year after earning their diplomas, according to a survey of graduates. Available for interviews will be students, career counselors and recruiters who are UMass Lowell alumni returning to campus to hire students because they know the quality of a UMass Lowell education. NOTE: This event is not open to the public but the media is invited to cover it.

WriterAward-Winning Author to Lead Writers on Campus Event
When: Wednesday, March 22, 5:30 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell’s Writers on Campus Series will present acclaimed author E.J. Levy, who will read from her debut story collection “Love, In Theory,” winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction and other honors, at a free program for the campus and the public. Levy will also discuss her latest project, a novel based on Dr. James Barry, a 19th-century physician who was born a woman but chose to live as a man in order to pursue a career as a surgeon. Presented by UMass Lowell’s English Department, the series invites writers to share their work and creative processes with the university community and public.

M2D2Entrepreneurs to Pitch Their Concepts for Innovative Medical Devices
When: Wednesday, March 22, 6 p.m.
What: Finalists in the M2D2 $100K Challenge – a nationwide competition that showcases the ideas of early-stage medical device, diagnostic and biotech companies – will pitch their innovations before expert judges. Participants will include creators of a new biopsy system for cancer diagnoses, a portable device to predict heart attacks and a new cement for bones. Winners, who will be announced next month, will share in $100,000 to advance their products. The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center, a joint venture of UMass Lowell and UMass Worcester, assists entrepreneurs in these sectors with all aspects of the process of moving new products from concept to commercialization.

SununuFormer White House Chief of Staff to Headline Lunchtime Lecture
When: Thursday, March 30, 11:45 a.m.
What: John H. Sununu – former White House chief of staff and the patriarch of one of New Hampshire’s political dynasties – will headline “The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush.” One in UMass Lowell’s Lunchtime Lecture Series, the event will offer Sununu’s view that his former boss was at times underrated. Also a former governor of the Granite State, Sununu is the father of current New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu and former U.S. Sen. John E. Sununu. The free event is presented by the university in partnership with Moses Greeley Parker Lectures with support from community partners. GreekFormer U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, Ghana to Share Insights
When: Thursday, March 30, 7 p.m.
What: Raymond Ewing, a former U.S. ambassador to Cyprus and Ghana, will draw on his 36-year career in foreign affairs to present “The United States and Cyprus: A Personal Odyssey” at UMass Lowell’s annual Zamanakos Lecture. Ewing served as ambassador to Cyprus under President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1984 and then as ambassador to Ghana under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1992. The event, a free program for the campus and community that celebrates Greek history and culture, is presented by UMass Lowell’s Hellenic Studies Program.

Concert‘Showing Off!’ Concert to Spotlight Talents of Music Students
When: Friday, March 31. Reception at 6:30 p.m. Concert at 8 p.m.
What: The UMass Lowell Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Rock Big Band, Chamber Singers and University Choir will be among the groups and soloists that will perform at “Showing Off!,” a concert of large-scale musical works designed to spotlight the talents of the university’s music students. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for UMass Lowell music students. Tickets are $15 per person for the concert and $40 for the concert and a reception before the show with the performers. Tickets to the concert and reception are available at www.uml.edu/Chancellor/Celebration-of-Music/march-31.aspx. Tickets to the concert are available at the door the night of the event.
