When: Wednesday, Jan. 11, 3 to 7 p.m.

What: Working professionals and others interested in pursuing a UMass Lowell education can speak with university representatives and learn about graduate, continuing education and online offerings at an admissions open house. UMass Lowell offers 42 master’s and 36 doctoral degrees, and more than 70 graduate certificate programs, which are available on campus, online or in a blended format that combines both options. Offerings include master’s programs in autism studies, public administration and engineering management, as well as doctoral programs in education, global studies and applied psychology. UMass Lowell programs are nationally accredited and ranked for quality and return on investment. On-site registration for courses will be available. Members of the public may RSVP to attend the event.

IrishForeign Affairs Adviser to Share Issues Central to Ireland’s Future

When: Wednesday, Jan. 11, 5:30 p.m.

What: The chief of staff and special adviser to Ireland’s minister of foreign affairs and trade will discuss policy issues central to the country’s future. Topics are expected to include the “Brexit” vote and what’s ahead as Ireland concludes its centennial observance of its quest for independence from British rule, known as the “Easter Rising” of 1916. Sarah Kavanagh’s free presentation for the campus and community is the latest in a speaker series on topics important to U.S. understanding of Irish politics and culture organized by UMass Lowell’s Center for Irish Partnerships. The center provides joint research ventures for faculty and students in Ireland and Northern Ireland that enhance their experiential education and deepen understanding between the American and Irish people.

ArtistArtist’s Exhibit, Talk Explore Modern Life, Technologies h2

When: Artists’ talk – Wednesday, Feb. 22, 4:30 p.m. Artist’s reception – Wednesday, Feb. 22, 6 p.m. Exhibit runs from Tuesday, Jan. 17 through Tuesday, Feb. 28. Gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What: The impact of modern-day technology on political, social, cultural and gender norms will be explored in “Solid State Mythologies,” an exhibit by Iranian-American artist Morehshin Allahyari. Works on display have been created in a variety of media, including 3-D printing, digital archiving, video and animation. During an artist’s talk and reception, Allahyari, named to Foreign Policy magazine’s 2016 Global Thinkers list, will discuss her creative process and meet with students, faculty and the public. Presented by UMass Lowell’s Department of Art and Design, all events are free and open to the campus and community.

PinkRiver Hawks, Hockey Fans Skate Strides Against Breast Cancer h2

When: Friday, Jan. 20, 7:15 p.m.

What: The UMass Lowell men’s ice hockey team and its fans will go “pink at the rink” to support breast cancer survivors and those living with the disease. As part of Hockey East’s “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer” program, a portion of the proceeds during the River Hawks game against the Providence College Friars will benefit Lowell General Hospital's TeamWalk for CancerCare, which provides services to cancer patients and their families. Special ticket packages include admission to the game and an upcoming men’s hockey contest, along with a pink t-shirt and donation to the cause. Since it began 11 years, ago, the league program has raised more than $300,000 toward the fight against the disease. MLKMLK Celebration Dinner Honors University, Community Leaders h2

When: Tuesday, Jan. 31, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

What: Members of the university community and the public who exemplify the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to social justice will be recognized with Distinguished Service Awards at the annual MLK Celebration Dinner. The theme for this year’s program is “the fierce urgency of now,” a term coined by King at the 1963 March on Washington, which drew more than 200,000 people and helped galvanize public opinion in favor of enacting legislation to protect civil and economic rights. Artwork and essays by Lowell public schoolchildren that best illustrate this theme will also be honored during the free event, which is open to the public. The program is organized by the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs.
