UMass Lowell’s world-class faculty, researchers and scholars provide concise and thought-provoking insight on current events for print, radio and TV journalists in need of authoritative sources. Relatable and engaging, experts are available in person, by phone or email to speak on topics in fields including health, science, education, business, social sciences and humanities.

This month’s hot topics and featured sources are:

The job market for the Class of 2017 – As college graduates across the country grasp their diplomas with one hand and hand out their resumes with the other, Greg Denon can talk about what they need to know and do to launch their professional lives. Denon is an authority on what employers are looking for in new hires and what the current job market holds. He leads UMass Lowell’s Career and Co-operative Education Center.

“13 Reasons Why” – With its focus on teen bullying, suicide and mental health, the Netflix drama has opened up a national dialogue on these subjects – and courted controversy for its realistic depiction of these issues. An expert on adolescent stress and depression, relationship and family expert Doreen Arcus can discuss behaviors that signal trouble in teens, what parents, teachers and friends can do to help and why the show is so popular. She is a Psychology Department professor.

Working mothers – As families celebrate Mother’s Day on May 14, sources in UMass Lowell’s Center for Women and Work can offer insight into the gains working mothers have made and the challenges they still face, including pay equity and the demands of balancing child care with a career. The center’s experts study the relationship between gender and work, seek remedies for inequalities and promote institutional change. Sources include faculty experts on economics, business and psychology.
