ArtTalents of UMass Lowell Art and Design Majors on Display
When: Exhibit runs through Thursday, Dec. 22. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell students working toward bachelor of fine arts degrees will display their senior thesis projects during a free exhibit for the campus and community. Art has been created in a variety of media, including animation, painting, photography, graphic design and sculpture. The students – who are from Andover, Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell and Reading – will talk about their inspiration and creative processes with fellow students, family, faculty and the public during an artists’ reception that will kick off the show.

AnimalsExhibit Raises Awareness About At-Risk Species
When: Exhibit runs through Thursday, Dec. 22. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What: “Endangered,” an exhibit that seeks to raise awareness about the variety of animal species that are at risk for extinction, features drawings in ink and pastel alongside typography designed to educate people about this issue. The free display, open to the campus and community, was created and installed by a UMass Lowell studio art major from Lunenburg and a graphic design major from Dunstable.

GraduateGraduate Admissions Open House Welcomes Prospective Students
When: Wednesday, Jan. 11, 3 to 7 p.m.
What: Working professionals and others interested in pursuing a UMass Lowell education can speak with university representatives and learn about graduate, continuing education and online offerings at an admissions open house. UMass Lowell offers 42 master’s and 36 doctoral degrees, and more than 70 graduate certificate programs, which are available on campus, online or in a blended format that combines both options. Fourteen new offerings include master’s programs in autism studies, public administration and engineering management, as well as doctoral programs in education, global studies and applied psychology. UMass Lowell programs are nationally accredited and ranked for quality and return on investment. On-site registration for courses will be available. IrelandForeign Affairs Adviser to Share Issues Central to Ireland’s Future
When: Wednesday, Jan. 11, 5:30 p.m.
What: The chief of staff and special adviser to Ireland’s minister of foreign affairs and trade will discuss policy issues central to the country’s future. Topics are expected to include the “Brexit” vote and what’s ahead as Ireland concludes its centennial observance of its quest for independence from British rule, known as the “Easter Rising” of 1916. Sarah Kavanagh’s free presentation for the campus and community is the latest in a speaker series on topics important to U.S. understanding of Irish politics and culture organized by UMass Lowell’s Center for Irish Partnerships. The center provides joint research ventures for faculty and students in Ireland and Northern Ireland that enhance their experiential education and deepen understanding between the American and Irish people.

MLKMLK Celebration Dinner Honors University, Community Leaders
When: Tuesday, Jan. 31, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
What: Members of the university community and the public who exemplify the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to social justice will be recognized with Distinguished Service Awards at the annual MLK Celebration Dinner. The theme for this year’s program is “the fierce urgency of now,” a term coined by King at the 1963 March on Washington, which drew more than 200,000 people, that helped galvanize public opinion in favor of enacting legislation to protect African Americans’ civil and economic rights. Artwork and essays by Lowell public schoolchildren that best illustrate this theme will also be honored during the free event, which is open to the public. The program is organized by the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs.
