BOSTON - The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) located at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Worcester and the law firm of Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP recently announced the five innovative and cutting-edge medical device startups that had the three highest scores in the M2D2 Venture Competition.

TheraTorr Medical Inc., Floelle Inc., Infection Prevention Solutions Inc. and co-first-place winners MedicaMetrix Inc. and Lucifics Inc. will together receive a total of $15,000 in M2D2 services that will allow these startups to develop their concepts into marketable medical devices. In addition, Windgap Medical received a “People’s Choice” award.

A ceremony and poster session were held at Nutter’s offices in Boston’s Innovation District April 11, where the winners were announced.

“I congratulate today’s winners of the M2D2 New Venture Competition. These entrepreneurs show that with some support and guidance, new ideas can become the next generation of medical devices,” said Stephen McCarthy, co-director of M2D2 and UMass Lowell plastics engineering professor. “The UMass Lowell and Worcester initiative, M2D2, is proud to be able to provide that support.”

“Given our work in medical device and biotech startups, we are very excited to see that there is so much cutting-edge thinking and potential investment being applied to the development of new medical device technologies,” said William C. Geary III, co-managing partner of Nutter, which was the title sponsor of the competition.

The M2D2 New Venture Competition is open to medical device technology-based startup businesses located in Massachusetts. Fourteen finalists were chosen and had to present before a panel of judges. The services include help from the UMass schools, coordinated through M2D2, including prototyping from the UMass Lowell College of Engineering, business plans and market development from the UMass Lowell Manning School of Business, and services from the Medical School in Worcester.
