WHAT: Dynamic human-rights activist John Prendergast – a nominee for TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2012 – will visit the UMass Lowell campus to engage students, faculty, staff and the public in his advocacy work to end crimes against humanity and cultivate the next generation of peacemakers.

Named UMass Lowell’s 2012 Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies, Prendergast recently testified on Capitol Hill and was arrested along with actor George Clooney to protest conditions in Sudan and South Sudan. He is featured in the “KONY 2012” documentary – viewed more than 80 million times online – that seeks to bring accused Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony to justice. 

Prendergast has spent 25 years working to stop human-rights violations around the world and foster peace in Africa. Co-founder of The Enough Project, he is also a board member and adviser to Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle’s humanitarian-aid group, Not on Our Watch. Prendergast has worked for the Clinton administration, the U.S. Department of State, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, the National Intelligence Council, the International Crisis Group and the U.S. Institute of Peace, among others. 

Last year’s Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies, Leymah Gbowee, went on to win the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

Prendergast’s visit to the university will include the following programs:
  • “Day Without Violence” on Tuesday, April 3. From 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., Prendergast will share his work at the annual event for the campus and community that will include Executive Vice Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney and Provost Ahmed Abdelal. Afterward, UMass Lowell students will meet with him. O’Leary Library Learning Commons, Room 222, UML South, 61 Wilder St., Lowell.
  • Community conversation on Monday, April 9. From 7 to 9 p.m., Prendergast will discuss the issues with the public, screening a film as part of this dialogue on world affairs. UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell.
  • “Pizza with Prendergast” on Monday, April 9. From 3 to 4 p.m., Prendergast will meet with Lowell youth organization activists about community organizing, mentorship, global issues and more.
