WHAT:  UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan will announce a multimillion-dollar property acquisition at a community event that will include University and city officials, representatives of the neighborhood, local organizations and the UMass Building Authority.

This is UMass Lowell’s third major property acquisition in the city since June 2009.

In addition to the university’s vision for the property, speakers at the event will discuss the importance of the site’s redevelopment for the entire city and how UMass Lowell will partner with the community on potential plans for the location.

In recent years, UMass Lowell has demonstrated an excellent track record of physical improvements and positive community and economic impact, particularly with acquisitions of the former DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Lowell, now the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, and the former Tsongas Arena, now the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.

With this site, UMass Lowell will dramatically increase total square footage of its facilities, which will help the university better serve its growing student body. UMass Lowell has seen a 30 percent increase in undergraduate students in the past three years.
